The Legendary Of Mahsuri
Mahsuri’s Tomb is the crypt of the legendary Princess Mahsuri. Located in the village of Mawat, 12km from Kuah, it is also known as Makam Mahsuri. Most of the island’s natural attractions have fables attached in true Malay style and Mahsuri’s Tomb is probably its most famous legend.
Many locals of Langkawi believe the legend to be true,
citing the decades of failed crops that followed Mahsuri's death. Langkawi was
also attacked by Siam numerous times, the last invasion taking place in 1821.
The field which was torched by the farmers is still known as Beras
Terbakar or "burnt rice". It is only at the end of the 20th century, after
the seven generations have supposedly come to pass, that Langkawi began to prosper as a tourist destination.
The descendants of Mahsuri continue to live in Phuket, Thailand, and have on occasion returned
to Langkawi to visit her tomb.
Among them was Sirintra Yayee (ศิรินทรา ยายี), also known as Wan Aishah Wan
Nawawi, who came into the spotlight during her visit to Kedah in 2000.
Wonders of Langkawi Underwater World
Underwater World Langkawi is one of the island's best known attraction. This world's largest aquarium located at the southern end of Pantai Cenang (almost at the border of Pantai Tengah), beside the Zon of free shopping centre. The huge white-washed structure houses more than 200 different species of marine and freshwater fish including harbour seals, rockhopper penguins, sharks, giant rays and the enormous Amazonian arapaima – the biggest freshwater fish in the world. This enormous fish can be seen in a medium-sized tank in front of the entrance door.
Amazonian Arapaima
The complex is dicvided into three sections: Tropical Rainforest, Temperate and Sub-Antartic. The Sub-Antartic was probably the most popular section as there is the 'penguin-arium' houses for the cute little rockhopper and black-footed penguins that cause a crowd of people around the exhibit to get a good look of this cute creatures.
Furthermore, there's a giant walk-through six million litre underwater tunnel tank which houses an extensive number of fish including sharks, giant stingrays and green turtles.
